I worked on an FCCU with a very similar problem. They had a constraint
in the LPG make off of the Debutanizer - a hydraulic limit in the
treaters downstream. Quite similar. They also originally had separate
Rxn/Rgn/MF & Gas Plant Controllers. We combined the 2 controllers into a
single application, and it does run on the LPG constraint. You are
correct, all of the gains are not contained in the level on the gas plant
feed drum, but this is not necessarily a problem you simply have to put in the
proper models, and be sure they are consistent. I think you are correct about
trying to get the optimizer to set the proper targets - you will leave benefits
on the table. Too many things can change in between solutions
- that is unless you have enough room in the RVP target to simply
dump C4's into the bottom.
