I would agree wholeheartedly with all the given comments. I think, as Bob mentioned, it depends on the dynamics of the unit. In most cases, leaving the reactor temperature controller closed at the regulatory level is a good method for full burn units.
I have seen one situation where the full burn unit didn't have great "mixing" of catalyst/air in the regenerator, thus the rx temperature (coke make) had significant effect on the regenerator temperature/dynamics. Thus even though the regulatory controller wasn't too bad (given the long dynamics of the process - 90 minutes to line out on slide valve move), we chose to break the TC due to the difficulty in characterizing the slide valve dp (as you mentioned in your note).
