Dan,

MDC Technology has quite a bit of experience in this area, having done around 12 RTO systems on power/utilities. They now package their offering as "Appreciate Power", which seems to be a marketing pitch for a basket of software licenses and services oriented toward the utilities problem. They use their own SQP/MIP optimizer to solve the setpoint and equipment selection problem.

I know they have systems at: Slough Heat and Power, Boots Manufacturing, Pfizer, BP Chemicals (Hull and Grangemouth), BP Expro Wytch Farm and Shell/Esso Brent offshore all in the UK, and another at Shell Chemicals Moerdijk.

Suprisingly, they've been doing quite a lot of optimization from their base in England for years, and claim to have implemented more RTO systems than Aspen or Honeywell. I think they were founded in 1981 by a group of engineers from ICI and British Steel. They're at www.mdctech.com.

I have some more info I can email you if you're interested.

Regards,
Doug

: Could anyone comment on their experience with applying control / optimization software to Power stations or Steam Generation facilities? Specifically it would be useful to know what software was used, and what ultimately was accomplished. In plants connected to refineries, part of the system will involve switching turbines, etc... to manage the steam header balance. For these cases, the system can only "recommend" that certain actions be taken. Any discussion here would be welcomed.
